The Reggio Emilia® Approach centres its learning around the ‘image of the child’ as it sees children as competent, capable and curious individuals. This belief translates into a collaborative learning environment where teachers co-learn with the children, creating a positive learning community.
The Reggio Emilia® philosophy is very much aligned with the IB-Primary Years Programme framework because both approaches value play and inquiry-based learning. The notion of providing children with the opportunity to ‘drive’ their own learning through their genuine interest in the world around them, promotes constructivism theory which heavily influenced the PYP approaches to teaching.
Here at Imperia, teachers create a classroom environment as one of the key elements to support children’s learning and development. Not only it needs to be stimulating and aesthetically pleasing, but it also needs to invite students to explore and be creative, in order for them to discover, wonder and question.
Teachers are skilled in utilizing different kinds of materials and approaches to teaching to support our curriculum. When teachers plan, design and set up their corners, they would do so with curriculum in mind – what skills would students need to develop? What knowledge do we want them to acquire? What understanding do we want them to develop? And how does the experience spark further curiosity for them to continue exploring?
