How To Raise Children To Be Critical And Creative Thinkers?

Having and honing the ability to think critically and analyze information is not only necessary but crucially important in the modern world. Children’s entire development, success in life, and understanding of it depend on their ability to think critically. To raise children to be smarter and critical thinkers, adults need to provide a stimulating environment, whether be it at home or at school and foster independent problem-solving. Some cultures may consider young children as little people who need a lot of support. May this be true or not, at Wisdomland Signture we believe that children are capable and competent human beings from the very first step into the world, and as such, we need to ensure are given opportunities to think for themselves and to develop independence. After all, research shows that children from birth are inquisitive, curious, and capable of communicating their needs in their own way.
Here at Wisdomland Signature, we design our classroom environment and learning through the eyes of a child which means, we are constantly thinking and focusing on strategies, to better support their cognitive and skills development. We engage students to learn about something that is relevant to them and is equally challenging, to ensure that they have ample opportunities to explore, trial, make mistakes, and learn from them.
Our IB – Primary Years Programme (PYP) framework enables teachers to not only focus on academics but also on developing social skills so that children can have a positive outlook and sense of responsibility. The following strategies are implemented at our school and can be implemented at home as well:

Encourage Curiosity: We encourage kids to ask questions and seek answers from a young age. This helps them develop a curious and inquisitive mindset. Provide opportunities for them to learn about new topics and explore the world, raising awareness of what happens around them and encouraging observation from different perspectives.

Promote Independent Thinking: We teach kids to think for themselves and make their own decisions rather than relying on others. Support risk-taking. Creativity involves taking risks and making mistakes. Encourage your child to try new things even when it looks challenging for them. Help them see that failure is part of the creative and growth process and that it is a stepping stone to new innovations and possibilities.

Solve Problems On Their Own: In order to foster a strong problem-solving mindset in children, we encourage our teachers to support children’s independence by expecting them to carry out simple tasks independently. It is imperative to provide them with ample opportunities to independently work through challenges, brainstorm unique solutions, and think outside the box, as this can not only help them develop important critical thinking skills but also instill a sense of confidence in their own abilities to tackle complex issues.

Teach Kids To Gather And Analyze Information: Teaching kids how to gather information from various sources; our school does not use prescription textbooks to enable teachers to use diverse resources and to help students analyze information critically, which will lead to developing their research skills. Children are required to make many important decisions as they grow up, such as the subjects they want to take up in higher education, therefore, the ability to utilize information and make decisions based on that information is an important skill to develop.

Provide Opportunities For Free Play: Encourage kids to think outside the box, be creative, and imagine new possibilities. Kids need unstructured playtime to explore and experiment with their imaginations. We aim to provide a balance between free play and structured play, through which, students are allowed to explore, experiment and construct their understanding.
